At the Region V Fall Regional Conference (FRC) 2001 in Dallas, TX the chair/vice-chairperson workshop discussed the declining enrollment of Blacks in colleges. In the weeks following FRC, the idea for A Walk for Education (AWFE) was presented by Kay Babineux from the University of Houston – Central Campus. In late November, committees were developed and a course of action was established to implement the first ever AWFE. On February 2, 2002, A Walk for Education was held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in the Fourth Ward neighborhood, a renowned underprivileged area in Houston, TX. Nearly 100 volunteers walked from door-to-door in the area and distributed 300 bags filled with information about colleges, vocational schools, SAT/ACT, and financial aid.
